Cargo bike workshop — Refshaleøen, Copenhagen
Lumen is a two-person workshop on Refshaleøen. We build front-box cargo bikes to order — one conversation, one drawing, one frame at a time. No showroom, no stock, no compromises.

01 — The beds
Every bed is made to order — length, wood, paint. These are starting points.
Lumen 1 · 80 cm bed — Trade
For everything that refuses a box: planks, plants, crates, a very calm dog. Oak platform with cleats, 80 × 60 cm.
Lumen 1 · 72 cm box — Family
The daily default. Birch plywood with a 3 mm steel rim. Two kids, one dog, nine bags of groceries — still upright at a standstill.
Lumen 1 · 90 cm crate — Trade
40 cm of side wall and a lockable lid. Plumbers, florists, cheesemongers, marketeers. 26 kg empty, 200 kg rated.
Bed length, wood and paint are all made to order — the conversation decides, not the catalogue.
02 — The process
From first call to handover: about thirteen weeks. We take six bikes at a time — a queue we can actually serve.
Forty-five minutes at the workshop or on a call. What you carry, where you park, who rides. We measure your cargo, not just your inseam.
You receive a technical drawing and a written quote within five working days. Change anything — before we cut steel, it costs nothing.
Reynolds 725 frame, TIG-welded in Refshaleøen. Painted, assembled, tuned. You get photos at every stage — brazing day included.
Ninety minutes of fitting, a ride through the neighbourhood, and your first service at 500 km — on us. Then: fifteen years of errands.
03 — Components
No proprietary mystery parts. Everything on a Lumen is standard, stocked and serviceable — by us, by your local mechanic, or by you, with a hex key and an afternoon.
No planned obsolescence.
If we stop making bikes tomorrow,
your bike still gets serviced.
04 — Configure
An honest estimate, live. The final quote comes after the design conversation — nobody picks a saddle over a form.
Prices in EUR, incl. Danish VAT. Final quote after your design conversation — drawings, advice and test rides are always free.
05 — The workshop
“We started Lumen because we couldn't find a cargo bike we'd trust with our own children. So we learned to weld.”
Mads & Sofie — founders
Lumen Cycles is a two-person workshop on Refshaleøen, the former shipyard island in Copenhagen harbour. We build six cargo bikes at a time — never more — and we answer the phone ourselves. Every frame is drawn, welded, painted and assembled forty metres from where you collect it.
06 — On the road
Unedited, from our service book and the odd coffee. Names shortened for Danish modesty.
“It swallowed the school run, the weekly shop and my catering boxes. Three years, 9,000 kilometres, one service visit.”
“The drawing stage sold us. They questioned every assumption before cutting steel. I've never owned anything so considered.”
