# Why We Have Summer and Winter ๐ŸŒโ˜€๏ธ ## The Big Secret: Earth is TILTED! Earth spins around a pretend stick called an **axis**. That stick isn't straight up and down. It **leans to one side**, and it *always leans the same way* as Earth travels around the Sun. ``` JUNE DECEMBER N N / / (๐ŸŒ) -----> โ˜€๏ธ <----- (๐ŸŒ) / SUN / S S The top half leans The top half leans TOWARD the Sun AWAY from the Sun = SUMMER โ˜€๏ธ = WINTER โ„๏ธ (for the top half) (for the top half) ``` Notice the stick points the **same direction** in both pictures. But because Earth moved to the other side of the Sun, the top half goes from leaning *toward* the Sun to leaning *away* from it! --- ## Why Does Leaning Toward the Sun Make It Hotter? **Reason 1: The sunlight is more concentrated** ๐Ÿ”ฆ ``` SUMMER WINTER (Sun high in sky) (Sun low in sky) | | | | \ \ \ \ | | | | \ \ \ \ | | | | \ \ \ \ ===[โ–ˆโ–ˆโ–ˆโ–ˆโ–ˆ]=== ========[โ–‘โ–‘โ–‘โ–‘โ–‘โ–‘โ–‘โ–‘โ–‘โ–‘]=== Sunshine squished into Same sunshine spread out a SMALL spot = HOT! over a BIG area = COOLER ``` **Reason 2: Longer days** โฐ In summer, the Sun is up for a long time (more time to warm things up!). In winter, it gets dark early. --- ## ๐Ÿงช Try This Together (5 minutes!) **Flashlight test:** 1. Shine a flashlight straight down at the table. See the small, bright circle? That's **summer**. 2. Now tilt the flashlight so it shines at a slant. The light spreads into a big, dim oval. That's **winter**! **Orbit test:** 1. Put a lamp in the middle of a dark room (that's the Sun). 2. Stick a pencil through an orange or ball and **tilt it a little** (that's Earth). 3. Walk in a circle around the lamp, **keeping the pencil pointed at the same wall the whole time**. 4. Watch how the top of the orange gets more light on one side of the circle and less on the other! --- ## ๐Ÿคฏ Bonus Fun Facts - **It's NOT about being closer to the Sun!** Earth is actually a tiny bit *closer* to the Sun in January! - **When it's summer here, it's winter in Australia!** The bottom half of Earth leans away when the top half leans toward the Sun. (Some kids there have Christmas at the beach! ๐Ÿ–๏ธ๐ŸŽ„)
