Seasons drawn for a 9-year-old

Chat

my 9 year old asked why we have summer and winter. can you draw it so she gets it?

I can't draw actual images, but here's a simple, fun drawing + explanation combo that works really well for this age!

The Drawing: "Ball on a Pencil" Trick

Have her draw this together:

  1. Draw a circle (or an oval — wider than tall — to show it spinning).
  2. Stick a pencil through it and tape it so it can spin = Earth's axis.
  3. Tilt the pencil at a noticeable angle.
  4. Shine a flashlight (or draw rays) from the Sun toward different parts of the ball.

The Kid-Friendly Explanation

"The Earth spins like a top, but it also leans. When the top leans toward the Sun, that half of Earth gets more sunshine — that's summer! When it leans away, it gets less sunshine — that's winter!"

For extra fun, she can hold a flashlight and tilt a ball toward her to "feel" summer vs. winter.

Simple Visual She Can Draw

\ ← Winter: leaning AWAY from the sun

Want me to write a little script for her to read aloud, or suggest a fun craft version (like a paper plate Earth)?

The catch: The Earth is closest to the sun in early January, in the northern winter: the seasons come from its tilt.
