1. The leaning is always the same way. The North Pole doesn’t wobble back and forth between seasons. It always points in the same direction in space (toward the North Star).
2. When we’re on one side of the Sun, that lean points the top of Earth toward the Sun. The Sun’s light hits us almost straight down. Days are long, the light is strong, and it’s summer.
3. Six months later, we’re on the other side of the Sun. The same lean now points the top of Earth away from the Sun. The light hits at a low angle, days are short, and it’s winter.

The best way to make it “click”: the Orange & Lamp trick

Grab an orange (or a ball) and a flashlight/lamp in a dark room.

1. Poke a pencil through the orange so it’s tilted (not straight up and down). That’s Earth’s tilted axis.
2. Walk in a circle around the lamp, but keep the pencil leaning the same direction the whole time (don’t spin it to face the lamp).
3. When the top of the orange leans toward the lamp, the light is bright and warm on that half → summer.
4. When the top leans away, the light is weak and slanted → winter.

One myth to squash right now

Many kids (and adults!) think winter happens because Earth is farther from the Sun. That’s not true. In fact, Earth is actually slightly closer to the Sun in January! Seasons are caused by tilt and angle, not distance.
