1. In SUMMER: Your part of the world (let's say the top half) is leaning TOWARD the Sun. The sun's light hits you straight on, like a flashlight shining right overhead. That makes it hot and the days are long!

2. In WINTER: Half a year later, Earth is on the other side of the Sun. Now your part is leaning AWAY from the Sun. The same flashlight is hitting you at a slant, spread out and weak. That makes it cold and the days are short!

And it takes Earth a whole year - 365 days - to go around the Sun once and get all four seasons.
